Dan Dan noodles, chilly prawns, braised pork and a hot pot spread that turns dinner into an evening — cooked the way it is cooked in China.

Flavour that tastes like the real thing

Good food is not about a long menu — it is about a kitchen that knows what it is doing. Ours is run by chefs who spent years cooking in China, and it shows in the details.

The Sichuan dishes have that signature numbing heat from real peppercorns. The Cantonese plates show restraint — a whole fish steamed with ginger and scallion, greens in oyster sauce. And the noodles and dumplings come from the northern tradition of hand-pulling and folding by hand.

Guests who grew up eating Chinese food are our toughest critics, and they are the ones who keep coming back.

Hot pot spread at Pokhara Chinese Restaurant

Built for sharing

Chinese meals are made to be shared, and the trick is balance. A good table mixes one saucy dish, one dry-fried, one steamed or clear, and a vegetable — with rice to soak up the sauces.

For a bigger group, the hot pot is the move: four bases and 27 fresh add-ins, everyone cooking at their own pace around the table. It is less a dish than a whole evening, and it is some of the best food in Pokhara to linger over.

What to eat, and how

What is the best dish to try first?

If it is your first visit, order across styles: one saucy dish (Sweet & Sour Pork or Chicken Chilly), one with numbing Sichuan heat (Mapo Tofu), a plate of Chicken Fried Noodles, and a whole fish if the table is four or more. Finish with the free green tea.

What food is Pokhara Chinese Restaurant known for?

Dan Dan noodles, sweet & sour dishes, chilly-style chicken and prawns, braised pork, shredded ginger duck, and the hot pot spread. Guests travelling from China say the flavours taste genuinely like home.

Is the food spicy?

Some of it, by design — several dishes use Sichuan peppercorns for a numbing heat. Just tell your waiter your preference and the kitchen will adjust the chilli, or steer you to the milder dishes.

Is there good vegetarian food?

Yes — 48 vegetarian dishes in total, from Mapo Tofu and braised eggplant to dry-fried green beans, broccoli in oyster sauce and water spinach with garlic. Not an afterthought section.

Why does the food taste so authentic?

Because the chefs learned it at the source. They are Nepalese cooks who worked for years in Chinese kitchens, so the technique and seasoning are the real thing rather than a local approximation.

How much does it cost to eat well?

Mains run Rs. 300 to Rs. 2,500. A satisfying meal for two with three dishes and rice is around Rs. 2,000 — excellent value for food of this quality.
